A little bird is building a nest

with lots of care and natural skills

His offspring will need the very best

and thus he slaves and strives without any rest

to create a little diamond in the rough

any less won't be enough

Then his struggle for a mate begins

he flaunts and fights

and won't give up until he finally wins

Six little ones to watch over and care for

to feed and with his life to guard

but three fell to the ground and instantly lived no more

while the fourth left the nest a bit too premature

That reckless chick drew a particularly sad deal

and ended as a stray cat's nutritious and tasty meal

In the end only two of them survived

fully grown and test flown

they've left the nest

and now every year for them too

it will be the same strife

A nest, a mate and a new brood

because that's how things go in a little bird's life
