Luke (1995-2009)

You went wherever I wentPoems - Luke.JPG

for more than fourteen years

the only one I ever told all

about my hopes and fears

Never judgemental

not capable of holding a grudge

and always melting my heart

with your eyes of rich chocolate fudge

I love you deeply

and you surely were my truest of friends

and so it’s doubly sad our life together

has reached its inevitable end

On your favourite spot in the garden

you laid your weary head to rest

and peacefully went to heaven

in that you were truly blessed

No pain

no suffering

your heart just stopped

ceased remembering

how to beat

Now from the empty morning

in which I miss your enthusiastic greet

to the lonely night

without you lying snoring at my feet

I miss you throughout the day

But there’s kind solace that softens your depart

the countless memories of you frolicking about

will always warm my heart

Goodbye my friend

hi fenny, been a long time. i subscribed and always get your poetry in my inbox but it's always different reading live on the site. so sad about your friend. but then again one is never sure if it's your imagination at its best or true life poetry.

@ Dennis ... this is sadly enough true life poetry ... Luke has been in our family from when he was a pup of merely 8 weeks until he died last week at age 14 ... needless to say that I'm shattered

@ Jody ... thanks ... eventhough we knew the day to say goodbye would be coming sooner rather then later these last few months ... it still came as a shock and the grief is massive

My heart is heavy for you. Our beloved pets become family and are loved as freely as a child. I have an old fellow myself...he'll be 18 yrs. old shortly. His journey's almost done. The first throes of grief are always unbearable. Stay strong...he'll be with you always and forever.

I'm so sorry for your loss,
Mattie

Such a touching poem. I'm glad he passed easily. I had to put my dog down a few years back. It's always better when they pass the way yours did. Thanks for writing such a beautiful tribute.
